Teaching Philosophy Statement

I hold the belief that education is one of the most fundamental gifts that humanity has to offer. An important goal of education is to broaden the academic, social, emotional, and physical abilities of individuals and to provide them a gateway into self-exploration and self-fulfillment. We as educators must take every opportunity to create a space where students are empowered and inspired to express their knowledge. Adaptability in the educational system aids in the effectiveness and increases the quality of engagement on the part of both educator and student. Adapting to the changes of any situation within public or private education is a critical aspect of teaching; it’s the ability to move forward within an ever-changing environment while becoming open-minded and receptive to what your students need for them to develop.

The environment and community of the classroom play important roles in education. The environment I want to create in my classroom is one that promotes courage in development, facing ourselves with the necessity of transformation and a quality of openness and support for my students where they can freely express themselves and build relationships. Incorporating activities and collaborative projects where the students work, learn, and retain information together through hands-on experience, visual demonstrations, and rhythmic connections will be an integral process to their development. It’s vital for the classroom environment to promote the arts in order to teach and learn about self-knowledge, respect, self-respect, and empathy, as well as multicultural ways of knowing.  I strive to build collaboration among classroom teachers, arts specialists, teaching artists (practicing professional artists with the complementary teaching skills), families, and community members. By incorporating local cultural expertise and leadership, the schools become an integral part of the community, which generates more resources for students in and out of school.
